Peter--
Way to blaze the trail (so to speak) for the rest of us! I am jealous-- which means that I need to re-ask the Arnot life questions-- and at least be out in nature more. Next month, I become an "empty nexter" (aka empty-nester) and should have more time to do just that. I will also be anticipating a semester sabbatical at Berkeley in 2010. Sabbaticals... another good invention... programmed transitions. Enjoy your time off the grid! Jennifer

Peter,

Wow! I didn't know you were a backpacker. I've done a good bit of the JMT, but never the whole thing. The largest contiguous piece I've done was in 1990 (while Sadam was invading Kuwait), from Florence Lake to Onion Valley (Kearsage pass), two weeks, 90 miles, no resupply. I've also done Whitney and various sections between Yosemite and Florence. (One of the passes south of Florence, I forget which, had four or five false summits; very frustrating!) Impressive if you can do the whole trail in three weeks. Enjoy the windows at Whitney.
